On Tuesday, North Syracuse firefighters practiced on a new training prop that was built by FF Joel Klaisle and FF Mick Chimber.

This prop was designed to simulate being trapped in debris. Firefighters ascend to the top of the stairs where they fall into a foam pit. The materials for the foam pit were donated by Five Star Martial Arts in North Syracuse. The foam pit makes it extremely difficult to maneuver your body in any direction. As firefighters struggle to maneuver they need to signal a MAYDAY and work on self-extricating themselves from the situation. FF Chimber took the foam pit design to the next level and added an escape tunnel. Each firefighter needed to focus on control and breathing as they worked through the training prop. This training prop makes the fall through the floor even more realistic by adding the debris element .

Thank you to Mick and Joel and Adam Engels who developed the lesson plan for the first drill on this prop!
